Original quote

Even though academic writing skills are crucial for undergraduate students, it is perhaps also reported to be a difficult skill to develop. At an advanced level, academic writing, even for most native English speakers, is a challenge. Students may encounter difficulties in terms of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and at a more advanced level in developing coherent arguments while writing reports and essays (Noori, 2023, p.102).

  1. Paraphrase others’ ideas and cite:

Academic writing skills are an important skill for undergraduate students despite its difficulty reported. The challenge is not only for non-native speakers, but also for native English speakers. While these challenges may include grammar, vocabular, and spelling, more advanced students may find it difficult to build arguments properly in their essays (Noori, 2023).

But…how do you blend these external voices with yours in a paragraph? We cannot simply list what others say.

Choose the good and bad paragraph and say why.

Example A

Academic writing is challenging for novice academic writers, especially undergraduate students. College students must write different types of papers such as argumentative essays, summaries, and lab reports. According to Noori (2023), while grammar and vocabulary are general challenges in academic writing, at more advanced level, students find it difficult to develop “coherent arguments while writing reports and essays” (p. 102). It is true because when writing argumentative essays in college, students should form their own arguments, persuade the audience by providing enough evidence for the arguments, and provide counter arguments as well. If students are not taught how to achieve these different steps in an essay in building an argument, it will be even more challenging for students to write successfully.
